Part V - 1821 SESQUI - SAMPLINGS 1971

During the long winter months, to satisfy the need for something fruity and tart, early Indianapolis women baked vinegar pie, claimed to be an original Hoosier recipe. It was sweetened with molasses instead of sugar; modern variations have a slightly different taste because of the refinement in commercial sugar and vinegar.

Vinegar Pie

    • 2 eggs, separated

    • Lump of butter, size of walnut

    • 2 Tablespoons corn starch

    • 1 cup sugar

    • 1 cup boiling water

    • 2 Tablespoons cider vinegar

    • 1 Teaspoon lemon juice

    • 9-inch pie shell, baked

Beat together well the egg yolks, butter, cornstarch and sugar. Add boiling water and vinegar. Cook until thick and add lemon juice. Pour into baked pie shell. Beat egg whites until stiff; cover pie with meringue and brown in a 300-degree oven for 20 minutes.

The return of warm weather brought fresh fruit and fresh fruit pies. Dr. Isaac Coe experimented with fruit trees in the rich, fertile soil and encouraged other to do the same. Cherries were picked right from the orchard and, with a little corn starch, a little butter and “all the sugar your conscience would allow, then turn your back and add another half cup”—cherry pie!

Quickie Cherry Pie

  • 2 frozen pie shells

  • 1-pound can sour cherries

  • 3/4 cup sugar

  • 3 Tablespoons flour

  • 1/4 Teaspoon red food coloring

  • 1 Tablespoon butter

Make lattice top from one of the pie shells. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Combine drained cherries, 1/4 cup of the cherry juice and remaining ingredients and pour mixture into pie shell. Cover with lattice top. Bake for 45 minutes until pie bubbles thoroughly.

SPRING FIREPLACE MANTLE REDO

DSCF1014

I decided it was time to change the mantle to something different. It was a changing scene for SEVERAL days. Papi never new what would be up there next. I believe this mirror was an auction find sometime ago. Not really sure, but I just shopped our collection, and there it was. Really like the shape.

While thrifting at Goodwill Outlet, recently, I spied this little Wedgwood vase. Of course, I grabbed it as quickly as I could. At .49 per pound, I figure it was worth the purchase. What do you think?

DSCF1009

The doves have been stored for awhile and they told me they really wanted to be out where everyone could see them. I know that’s what they said.

DSCF1010

The oil lamp belonged to my grandfather Wainscott. I was fortunate to purchase it at one of his auctions. I was told that he sold oil lamps before he and my grandmother were married. There was a hanging lamp that I REALLY wanted, but it was out of my price range. This lamp has already been promised to one of our grandchildren when we are finished with it.

I decided my grandfather Wainscott’s mantle clock should have a chance to actually be on a mantle for a change. My mother inherited the clock and for the past several years it has been on the top of a book shelf in her apartment. Soon my brothers and I will be dividing mothers things and I just thought the clock could have a place of honor on my mantle until that time.

The group of candles had been on the mantle, previously, and they just sort of stayed, giving some additional color. Everything has stayed the same for a few days now. Maybe I’m finished. Well, at least for a few days. Love the fact that I can always do something different if I feel like it.

Starting Seeds Indoors

DSCF1018

A couple of weeks ago, while in the Dollar Store, I spotted herb starting kits for, guess what, $1. Well, I grabbed the chives, parsley, and sweet basil to start an indoor herb basket and here they are. Cute little beginning plants. I love to check them and see how they are progressing.

Sunday, I found a tutorial from Lindy, at Cottage Hill for Recycled Newspaper Pots that you might like to use. I was making another one that was a folded pot, very complicated, and have now switched to the Cottage Hill one. EASY!! I used a mushroom can and it’s perfect. She also shows her beautiful Peppermint Zinnias. I emailed her to find out where she bought the seeds and she actually has been saving them each year for some time. I Googled and found them on Amazon for a pretty good price. Need some!!

Here are some of my newspaper pots with Moon Flowers, Lavender, African Daisy’s, and Hollyhocks. Just started all these this week so nothing has sprouted yet, but I’m “expecting”.
